Went to Vera's for the first time yesterday in about 10 years. I must say it is not what I remembered. We went for dinner around 4:45ish and was out by 5:30. No one was there, possibly because it was early on a Friday and 100 degrees outside! So, before going, took a look at the menu and it wasn't very big, so I was a bit skeptical. But it was hot out, no food in the house to cook, and was literally right down the street so we bit the bullet and tried it out. We have 2 infants so I was a bit skeptical. I was wrong.
We walked in and the staff was completely friendly to us and provided us with 2 high chairs and instantly took our drink orders. They even brought my daughter her own iced tea for no charge. The prices are a bit steep, but as I found out, you get what you pay for. We ordered calamari as an appetizer, I got nacho's and the wife got the SMALL crab cake sandwich. They offered a 10oz crab cake sandwich for a whopping 30ish dollars, but like I said, you get what you pay for. We always order our daughter her own meal even though she is only a year and a half, that little girl can put down some food, so we got her chicken tenders and fries. So here is the skinny on the food.
The portions of food that we received were WELLLLL worth the money we paid. The crab cake sandwich was massive. Only being 5oz, it was all lump crab meat, and my wife couldn't finish it, so me and my daughter had to help her out. Seasoned perfectly and hardly any filling in it. The nacho's I ordered were not extravagant, and that is what made them great. Sometimes simple is better. The ground beef was not over seasoned and the chips never got soggy. When you order a kids chicken tenders, you would not expect the portion size to be the size of an adult's meal, but that is what it was. One chicken tender was about the size of a grown man's hand, and that was all my daughter could eat. 8 bucks for her meal, and we took the rest home and that's probably what she will eat for the rest of the weekend. Overall a great experience.
The downfalls: The prices are a bit steep, so don't expect a 20 dollar dinner. Like I said, you get what you pay for. You drop the money, you get good service and large portions of very good food. And the other downfall was our appetizer came out about 5 minutes before our meal did, so our table was a bit over crowded with food. The only reasons I gave it 4 vs 5 stars. Overall, a great experience! -

Have been to this place a few times. The food is good. The views are great. I like to bring out of town family here and show them a good time. There's one thing that sticks out every 3/4 times I've been here and that is the horrible customer service from staff. Not a big reviewer on here but my last visit really showed how bad it was

Seeing as we are visitors to the Dowell area we rely on Yelp and casual searching to find places to eat. A couple of days ago we saw the sign for Vera's and decided to give it a try. Two of us got the fish and chips, two of us got the crab cake sandwich, and the last person got the $2 blue crabs. The fish and chips was pretty good. Plenty of fish, tasty and not greasy, served with fries. A flavorful tartar sauce rounded out the fish. The crab cake sandwiches, from what i was told, were really good. A giant fried crab ball slapped between a tasty bun topped with veggies. The blue crabs were plentiful but the individual was not able to get through a single one of crabs he ordered. Granted they are $2 bucks a piece, but you don't want to throw away good food. Anyhow, the crabs were caked in some sort of salted seasoning (old Bay, I'm told a Chesapeake standard) which in turn made them waaaaaay too salty to eat. Every bite sense saltier then the last. Normally a little seasoning in the water with a hint of vinegar is all you need. But, this is Maryland and it appears to be the standard in how they do up they're crabs. The atmosphere was pretty good, the service wasn't too bad, the server popped around at the right amount of time each time. There happened to be an unexpected fun part to this place which was the beach tiki bar right next to the restaurant. Beautiful area, great music, fun people and games, and as very stocked bar.
